“The Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq”
Rembrandt van Rijn, 1642, Northern Renaissance, Netherlands
FANFARE: Museums Re-open!
Officially titled “The Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq” this is one of the most famous paintings by Rembrandt. Unlike previous group portraits where the subjects were formally positioned and posed within the painting, this one is like a ‘stop action’ where the company members rush to organize themselves for a parade. This life-size painting (11’11” x 14’4″) is one of the top exhibits of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.
Like many museums, the Rijksmuseum has been closed during the pandemic. Although this clip does not advertise its current re-opening, to promote their museum a few years ago, they brought this famous Rembrandt painting to life in a shopping mall. This is incredible! the museum staged a ‘reenactment” of sorts, immortalized on this YouTube. I encourage everyone to check it out! I celebrates museums everywhere!
TRAVEL TIP: The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Netherlands is one of the top of the top, world-class art museums in the world. It alone is worth a trip to Amsterdam! I recommend getting there as soon as they open in the morning and immediately head to the exhibition hall where The Night Watch and a host of masterpieces are displayed. This helps avoid the crowds and gives you a better opportunity to get up close to the paintings and enjoy them to the fullest. The various city passes available are excellent and worth the money spent. There are several options; check them out to see which one fits our itinerary, budget and wish list best. https://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en
